Emma Birts

Emma Birts was born in London in 1979 but grew up in Bath. Following an Art Foundation course at The University of West of England (1998 - 1999) she went on to study Graphic Design at Bournemouth Art Institute, graduating in 2002. She now owns and runs Rostra Gallery in Bath while occasionally finding time to indulge her passion for ceramics!

Brought up surrounded by dogs, cats, pigs and other animals, these characters have inspired Emma's work and imagination. She produces a range of jewellery, prints and ceramics which take their inspiration from children's book illustrators, Japanese culture and packaging.

Each piece is sculpted individually and hand painted with underglaze, biscuit fired and then fired again with a transparent glaze over the top which often crazes giving each piece a unique finish.
