Laura Mackrell

Laura completed a BA HONS Degree in Ceramic Design at Swansea Institute of Higher Education in 2001. Her first love of clay started with the hand building coiled technique, making vessels inspired by nature and texture.

Found natural patterns are often impressed into forms and used on the surface of the clay body creating a tactile and decorative texture. The technique of coiling and pinching to make forms often shows evidence of the maker’s finger marks which adds to the overall texture. Laura also enjoys impressing leaves, ammonites and fossils into her work, recording the impression to leave a vivid imprint highlighted by glaze or oxide applied to the surface. Laura currently spends her spare time working with clay and is looking forward to experimenting in the future with ceramic and glass, ceramic jewellery and further her knowledge of alternative firings.
